BIOGRAPHY
Isabel Bigelow
1966-2024
We are deeply saddened to share the passing of artist and friend, Isabel Bigelow. A beloved painter and printmaker, Isabel will be remembered for her mastery of sublime landscapes and atmosphere. Inspired by the simplicity and transcendence of nature, her paintings feature delicate forms often portrayed in a monochromatic palette.
After working with Isabel for over 20 years, we are in awe of her life's work. She was a prolific artist but also a loving mother and partner. Her study of religion was integral to her work. “The ideas and methods of prayer and ritual resonate profoundly with the practice of creating art,” said Bigelow in an article in Elle Decor. Her work has left a lasting impact on us and our gallery. In this sad time, it brings us overwhelming happiness knowing her work will continue to glow and bring joy to the collectors who live with it. On behalf of Isabel's family we want to thank all of those who championed her work in her lifetime and beyond.
Isabel was a graduate of Harvard University and has an MFA from Maryland Institute College of Art. Her work is in the collections of The Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia, South Carolina, The Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, Yale University Art Gallery, The New York Public Library, the University of Virginia and the Hunterdon Museum of Art, Clinton, NJ. Her exhibitions have been reviewed extensively in art publications including Art in America. She has been awarded a Pollock-Krasner Foundation award and attended residencies at the MacDowell Colony, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Yaddo and Millay.
Isabel was a beautiful person inside and out. Through her paintings, she will always be remembered.
