Plein Air
July 13 to August 11, 2023
Plein Air is a style of painitng produced outdoors in natural light. Plein Air painting is about leaving the studio behind, where academic rules might produce predtermined outcomes, and immersing oneself in the real world.
The practice of making art outside dates back centuries but the French Impressionists elevated the artform and coined the term “en plein air” which is French for “in the open air”.
In this collection of works, various techniques are used to address the way light and air interact in the world outside the artist’s studio. This exhibition takes a broad view of what a landscape can be. Though not every piece was made completely outdoors, all of the works address what it feels like to be outside experiencing firsthand the various moods in nature: the way light, air, water, and earth interact to summon emotional states and the way our inner worlds are reflected and augmented by our surroundings.
Featuring works by: Michael Abrams, Vinna Begin, Poogy Bjerklie, Gabe Brown, Shawn Dulaney, Thomas Hager, Tyler Haughey, Susanna Howe, John Huggins, James Kao, Kathryn Lynch, Eileen Murphy, Jason Frank Rothenberg, Rick Shaefer, Peter Schroth, and Andrew Zimmerman
Exhibition hours are Tuesday-Friday 11am-5pm
