Poogy Bjerklie, The Moment Before Night Fell
Jun 6 – Jun 29, 2024

New York, NYSears-Peyton Gallery is pleased to present Poogy Bjerklie’s fourth solo exhibition, The Moment Before Night Fell. The paintings in this exhibition are inspired by deeply embedded memories of her native Maine. They are a meditative observation into a world, both familiar and mysterious.

Bjerklie creates a soft-focus atmosphere using recognizable shapes and forms that emerge as the natural world. Softly brushed layers of color transform the particularities of place into expressive dreamlike spaces filled with a range of moods, real and imagined.

While referencing the landscape of her childhood in Maine, the nine oil paintings, all originally on paper and then mounted to panel, were painted in Bjerklie’s New York Studio. Bjerklie relocates to her cottage in Maine every summer where her surroundings reimprint themselves in her memory. She keeps a close eye on the way the natural world responds to changing conditions. “Patterns I Must Follow” features a deep green palette, ponds, pools, and the misty atmosphere of a particularly rainy summer.

Poogy Bjerklie is a graduate of the Maine College of Art.  She had a one-person exhibition at the Maine Museum of Art in 2018 and her work is in their permanent collection.  She has been an Artist in Residence at The Loft, in Cadaques, Spain, Minoeterie 21 in Brittany, France, and Haystack, Deer Isle, Maine.  She’s been featured in numerous group shows throughout the US and written about in The Hudson Review.
